The recipient was born in West Hartlepool 23-10-1890 & served as a 2nd engineer with the Mercantile Marine during WW1. HE WAS KIA F&F 1-8-1918 SERVING WITH THE 1/5TH BATTALION. J.R. Porter. He is entitled to the August to November clasp for the ribbon of his 1914 Star but this is missing from the group. He is buried in Ste.Marie cemetery at Le Havre & is recorded by the C.W.G.C as the late 38 year old Husband of Adelaide Dowd of 45 Gellatly Road, New Cross, London. He was reported as wounded & missing in the casualty list published 18-11-1915 & his death was eventually presumed to have taken place on 26-9-1915 during the battle of Loos. Battle of Jutland awarded Distinguished Service Medal with much prior service, Chief Stoker Arthur Harbour, HMS Superb at Jutland, DSM rim dated 31 May - 1 June 1916.
